Many Glacier (Swiftcurrent)
Many Glacier is open to private vehicles again in 2026, with no reservation and no shuttle requirement. The 2025 season, when access was limited to lodging guests, wilderness permit holders and a $2 day-hiker shuttle, is over. NPS: “Construction is completed and not anticipated in the Many Glacier area in 2026.”
The rebuild left a bigger lot. NPS states the Swiftcurrent area now has 339 parking spaces, an increase of 171 — roughly double what was there before, and the only published capacity figure anywhere in Glacier National Park.
That buys real breathing room at the trailhead for Grinnell Glacier, Iceberg Lake and Ptarmigan Tunnel. It does not make it a late-morning destination.

If you researched Many Glacier any time in the last two years, you probably read that you can't drive there. That was true, and it isn't now.
Through 2025, the Swiftcurrent water system and road rehabilitation project meant private vehicle entry after July 1 was limited to visitors holding wilderness camping permits, commercial service reservations or lodging reservations. Everyone else took a paid day-hiker shuttle. That was one of the sharpest access restrictions anywhere in the park system.
For 2026, NPS states plainly that construction is complete and not anticipated in the area this year. Normal vehicle access is back, and since the park dropped vehicle reservations park-wide, there is nothing to book. Drive in.
One caution against assuming this is permanent: utility work on the Many Glacier Hotel developed area is still in design, with construction possibly starting in late 2026 or 2027. This valley has been disrupted for three consecutive seasons and the file isn't closed.
339 spaces — the only number Glacier publishes
The rebuild nearly doubled the lot. NPS's February 2026 construction update states the Swiftcurrent area now has 339 parking spaces, an increase of 171 parking spaces, which puts the old capacity around 168.
That figure deserves attention beyond Many Glacier, because it is the only published lot capacity anywhere in Glacier National Park. Logan Pass, Avalanche Creek, St. Mary Falls, Two Medicine — none of them have one. A park that will tell you a lot fills by sunrise won't tell you how big it is. Here, briefly, it did, because construction reporting forced the number into the open.
What 339 spaces buys is a wider morning, not an all-day lot. The trails leaving here — Grinnell Glacier, Iceberg Lake, Ptarmigan Tunnel — are full-day objectives whose hikers arrive early and stay out, so turnover is slow. Doubling the capacity of a lot with almost no churn moves the fill time by hours, not by half a day.
Plan B
There is no shuttle, and that's the thing to internalise. The 2026 Logan Pass Shuttle doesn't come to Many Glacier — it runs the Going-to-the-Sun corridor only. The $2 day-hiker shuttle that served this valley in 2025 existed because of the construction closure and ended with it. Many Glacier is a drive-in destination with no transit fallback.
The Many Glacier Hotel lot is the overflow, a short distance down the rebuilt road from Swiftcurrent, and it's the only alternative inside the valley.
Come early for the bears as much as the parking. This is among the densest grizzly habitat in the lower 48, trails here close for bear activity at short notice, and the Grinnell Glacier trail in particular gets closed some seasons. Carry spray, check the status board at the ranger station on the way in, and treat a closed trail as the likelier disruption to your day than a full lot — which, in a park where parking is usually the whole story, is a genuine change of subject.
