Logan Pass
NPS says the lot “usually fills by sunrise.” Not by 8 a.m. — by sunrise. That is the single most useful sentence about parking at Logan Pass, and it has been on the Going-to-the-Sun Road page since well before the 2026 changes.
New this year: a 3-hour parking limit, in effect 24 hours a day from July 1 to September 7, 2026. You park, walk to the permit kiosk, take a free timestamped permit and display it on your dashboard. Three hours covers Hidden Lake Overlook comfortably. It does not cover the Highline Trail.
And NPS is explicit that the permit is not a reservation: “a parking space at Logan Pass is not guaranteed.”

Most parks hedge. Glacier put a time on it, and the time is sunrise.
In July that means somewhere around 5:45 a.m. in northwest Montana. The lot then “remains very busy throughout the daytime hours,” which is NPS's way of saying it doesn't meaningfully drain until evening. Weather moves this — a socked-in morning buys you a couple of hours — but that's the only variable NPS credits.
What NPS won't tell you is how many spaces there are. There is no published capacity for the most fought-over lot in the park. The number you'll see repeated online traces back to a park social media post rather than any citable page, so we're leaving it out. It also doesn't matter much: when a lot fills before dawn, its size is an academic question.
The three-hour clock, and what it costs you
From July 1 to September 7, 2026, Logan Pass runs a 3-hour parking limit, 24 hours a day. The mechanism is low-tech: park, walk to the permit kiosk, take a free timestamped permit, walk back and put it on the dash. NPS provides tape for convertibles and motorcycles.
Do the arithmetic against what people actually come here to do. Hidden Lake Overlook is a comfortable fit — it's a short there-and-back from the visitor center and you'll be well inside the window.
The Highline Trail is not. The classic version runs one-way from Logan Pass to The Loop and takes most of a day, which is flatly incompatible with a three-hour limit on the car you left at the pass. If the Highline is your plan, the shuttle isn't the fallback — it's the only sane way to do it. Ride up, walk to The Loop, catch the bus back. That's what the stop at The Loop exists for.
Two exceptions to the overnight ban are worth knowing: wilderness permit holders whose itinerary starts or ends at Logan Pass, and guests with a Granite Park Chalet reservation.
Plan B
The shuttle, booked in advance, is the real answer for most people. It's $1 per person on Recreation.gov, no walk-ups, running July 1 – September 7. Board at Apgar Visitor Center, Lake McDonald Lodge, St. Mary Visitor Center or Rising Sun Picnic Area. Budget 90 minutes from Apgar and 60 from St. Mary, and know the return frequency before you commit: buses leave Logan Pass roughly every 60–90 minutes westbound and about hourly eastbound, last runs at 7:30 and 8:00 p.m.
The pre-sunrise drive still works, and it's the only thing that does if you want your own car there. There's no reservation gate in 2026, so being at the pass at 5:30 a.m. is purely a question of willingness. The three-hour clock starts when you get your permit, so an early arrival also gets you off the mountain before the limit becomes a nuisance.
The late-afternoon window is underrated. Hikers clear out through the afternoon and the lot loosens after about 4 p.m. Light on the Hidden Lake boardwalk is better then anyway, and a three-hour limit at 5 p.m. is not a constraint on anything.
