For years, Castle Rock parking meant cars jammed along a blind curve of Big Bear Boulevard. That ended in July 2025: the City of Big Bear Lake opened a purpose-built lot at Talbot Drive with 38 paved spaces (2 ADA), a restroom building, trash service, and a bike rack — and with it came the other half of the fix: since July 23, 2025, parking along Big Bear Boulevard near the trailhead is prohibited and strictly enforced, with a $100 fine. Park in the lot or don't park.
The lot is free with no Adventure Pass required — a genuine rarity in this range — with posted hours of 7am–7pm.
It still fills
Thirty-eight spaces meet Big Bear's most popular trail: on summer and fall weekends the lot is typically full by 9am. With roadside banned, there's no shrug-and-improvise option — the play is to arrive before 8:30am, come on a weekday, or swing back after mid-afternoon when the morning wave clears.
